For those of you who want to root your HTC One, here’s a step-by-step tutorial for all Windows, Mac, and Linux computers, that will allow you to unlock the bootloader, install TWRP recovery, and root your HTC One without losing your apps/settings by using ADB backup.
While HTC One is one of the best smartphones produced last year, it’s not free from problems. The thing is, the Samsung Galaxy S4 seemed to have stolen the limelight so many One owners would have dig a little deeper to find solutions to their problems.
One of the problems that seem common with the phone is the random rebooting or shutting down. It happens without apparent reason but there are a couple of procedures you can do to determine what the problem really is and fix it.
Boot HTC One to Safe Mode
It could be an app that’s causing all the trouble but you cannot really pin-point which one it is. To confirm your suspicion, you would need your phone to boot into the Safe Mode and have all third-party apps and services disabled upon start up. Here’s how you do it:
- From any screen, press and hold the Power button.
- Tap and hold the ‘Power off’ option.
- Tap ‘Restart.’
- When the phone restarts, ‘Safe Mode’ will appear on the lower-left corner of the screen. If it doesn’t, repeat the process.
Now, observe closely if the phone still reboots or shuts down while in this mode. If it doesn’t, then you have confirmed your suspicion that third-party apps are causing the problem. You need to determine which app is it and uninstall or disable it. Here’s how you uninstall a third-party app:
- From any Home screen, tap the Applications icon.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Application manager.
- If necessary, swipe right to the Downloaded screen.
- Tap the desired application.
- Tap Uninstall and then tap OK.
Uninstalling the app that causes the phone to reboot would solve this problem. However, if the phone still reboots even if it’s in Safe Mode, there’s nothing left for you to do but the next step.

Reset your HTC One
This procedure is a little bit of a hassle as you need to back up your data such as downloaded content, ringtones, images, apps, and contacts. However, this procedure would always solve a problem like this. Now, here are the couple of ways you can do the factory reset:
Reset from the Settings Menu
- From the Home screen, tap ‘Applications’ icon.
- Tap Settings and scroll to and tap ‘Backup & reset.’
- Tap ‘Reset phone.’
- Scroll down a bit and select ‘Erase all data’ check box.
- Tap OK to confirm.
Reset using Hardware Keys
- Turn the phone off completely.
- Press and hold the ‘Volume Down’ and ‘Power’ keys together.
- When you see an Android robot on a skateboard, release both keys.
- Use the Volume Down key to highlight FACTORY RESET.
- Press the Power button to choose it.
You cannot retrieve files deleted during the reset so be extra mindful to backup all important data on your phone prior to following any of the procedures above. Now, if the phone still reboots even after doing a factory reset, have it checked by a technician as it may be a hardware problem.

This is a guide for rooting the HTC One S for Windows, Mac, and Linux using Superboot. Superboot is credited to PaulObrien of the MoDaCo forums.

Part 1 – Get Superboot
Bluetooth audio is handled through system settings, is separate from apps, and will continue working for apps that you deny permission for.)You’ll see a Bluetooth request from stores and even fast food chains that might utilize beacons for in-store promotions or to help you find what you’re looking for in the right aisle. It’s a reasonable question when you see that an app “would like to use Bluetooth.” (To be clear, you don’t have to. As it should! But there’s more room for confusion around the Bluetooth prompt. At the most basic level, I think some iPhone owners are going to wonder and maybe even assume that they must grant Bluetooth permission for music and other media apps to continue working with their Bluetooth earbuds, headphones, or speakers. Superboot is the program that will root your HTC One S.
- Step 1. Download Superboot. You can download Superboot from the original thread by clicking here.
- Step 2. Extract Superboot to the folder of your choice. If you are unfamiliar with .Zip, they are archive folders which can be opened or extracted. Current builds of Windows and Mac have built in methods for extracting .Zip archives. If you are using an older version of Windows, install 7-zip and then right-click to select the option “extract here” to unzip the folder.
(If you are using Mac or Linux and are unfamiliar with using Terminal, extract the folder to your desktop and we will walk you through the process.)

Part 2 –Put your phone in bootloader mode.
Bootloader mode will allow your phone to be flashed with unsigned partition images, which means it allows you to modify software on your phone in ways you would not normally be able to. We’re going to use this mode to root your phone.
- Step 1. First turn the phone off.
- Step 2. Next, turn the phone back on while holding down the “volume down” button.
- Step 3. Press the power button again to enter fastboot mode.
Part 3 –Run the Superboot program.
- Step 1. Attach your phone to your computer with the USB cable.
- Step 2. If you are using Windows: you don’t have to type anything out. Just open the ‘install-superboot-windows.bat’ file. You’re done
- Step 2. If you are using a Mac or Linux: you will need to open a terminal window to the directory you extracted the file to.
If the extracted folder is on your desktop, enter the following command into the terminal window:
cd /users/USERNAME/Desktop/r3-ville-superboot
(Where USERNAME is your Mac/Linux username.)
This will change the directory (cd) to the extracted folder on your desktop.
- Step 3. If you are using Mac, run the command ‘chmod +x install-superboot-mac.sh’ followed by ‘./install-superboot-mac.sh’
- Step 3. If you are using Linux, run the command type ‘chmod +x install-superboot-linux.sh’ followed by ‘./install-superboot-linux.sh’

(chmod +x will give the program permission to execute or run, while . executes the program)
At this point, your phone should be rooted. You can safely delete the Superboot files from your computer, or keep them on hand for later use. If you have any issues with the Superboot software, the original MoDaCo and XDA-developers forum threads provide amazing support.
